Here’s the thing about desk setups — the internet will have you thinking you need to spend five grand to have something respectable. Absolute rubbish. This Budget Beast setup proves you can build something genuinely solid for under a thousand dollars.

The AOC 24G2SP is the monitor pick, and it’s a banger at this price point. 24-inch IPS, 165Hz, good colour accuracy for the money — this is the monitor that budget-focused reviewers keep recommending because it just delivers. You don’t need 4K when you’re just starting out.

The Royal Kludge RK84 is one of the best-kept secrets in the mechanical keyboard world. Hot-swappable switches, Bluetooth and 2.4GHz wireless, decent stock keycaps — and it comes in under $80. Pair it with some aftermarket keycaps down the track and you’ve got a board that punches well above its weight.

For the mouse, the Logitech G305 is a no-brainer. Wireless via Lightspeed dongle (essentially zero latency), lightweight, and the single AA battery lasts roughly six months. It’s simple, it works, it’s cheap. Done.

The desk situation is the tried-and-true IKEA LAGKAPTEN tabletop on ADILS legs. Is it the fanciest desk in the world? Nah. Does it wobble? Barely. At 140cm it gives you enough room for your monitor, keyboard, and a cuppa. Student desk energy, but make it tidy.

The chair is always the trickiest part on a budget. The Ergolux office chair won’t win any design awards, but it’s got adjustable lumbar support and it’s comfortable enough for a few hours at a stretch. Upgrade this first when budget allows.

Finishing touch: a Baseus LED desk lamp with adjustable colour temperature. Warm light for evening sessions, cool white for focused work.

Total: ~$950 AUD. That’s a complete setup — monitor, keyboard, mouse, desk, chair, and lamp — for under a grand. Start here, upgrade pieces over time. Your future setup will thank this one for the solid foundation.
